This photograph of the south-east side and sacristy of St. John’s Cathedral in Den Bosch, was captured anonymously with light and shadow. The way the light hits that stone! It feels like the photo is trying to capture something almost impossible, like the way light is always changing but stone remains. Look at how that tree frames the sacristy, its branches almost dissolving into the architecture. It’s like the photographer is thinking about growth and decay, about how things change and stay the same. You can almost feel the history in the way the building is aged and solid. It feels connected to other work from that time. Like those atmospheric paintings of the Romantic era with their ruins or those early photographs that tried to show how light made things. It makes you think about the way different artists, or photographers, architects—they’re all talking to each other across time, trying to figure out how to catch life itself.
