Yinka Shonibare created Windy Chair I using vibrant batik fabric stretched over a sculptural form. I love the boldness of how Shonibare uses colour, those oranges and blues just popping against each other! He's not afraid to play with pattern either, mixing stripes and floral motifs in ways that shouldn't work, but totally do. The fabric drapes and folds, creating a real sense of movement. Take a look at the way the fabric seems to defy gravity. The curves and twists are frozen in place, like a snapshot of a windy day. It's a bit like how the Futurists tried to capture motion in painting, but with a sculptural twist. You might see echoes of El Anatsui, in the way Shonibare uses fabric to create these amazing, flowing forms. Ultimately, it's a piece that makes you think about movement, colour, and the way materials can take on new meanings when you mess around with them.
