Curator: Here we have Vija Celmins' "Night Sky 1 Reversed," part of the Tate collection. It's a delicate image, only about 39 by 48 centimeters. What strikes you first? Editor: It feels like a vast, silent expanse. The reversed field, light stars on a dark ground, evokes a sense of the infinite. Stars as points of light, piercing darkness. Curator: Celmins is known for her meticulous realism, but there's also an interesting tension here. She's recreating an image, but the act of reversal changes its cultural weight. Editor: Absolutely. The "night sky" is laden with cultural significance—navigation, mythology, dreams. By inverting it, Celmins asks us to reconsider how we perceive these symbols. It’s a powerful statement about the relativity of images. Curator: Her work also underscores the role of institutions in framing our view of nature itself. Is a night sky in a gallery the same as the one we see above? Editor: Perhaps it becomes more about memory, an echo of collective stories. It makes one think about the nature of images as carriers of cultural memory. Curator: A provocative thought, especially considering Celmins' dedication to such precise reproduction. Editor: Exactly, it lingers in the mind, this quiet, reversed cosmos.

Night Sky 1 Reversed is a three-colour, multi-technique print on medium weight white Hahnemühle Copperplate paper that depicts a negative version of a starry night sky, the stars printed in black against a cream field. It was printed and published by Gemini G.E.L. (Graphic Editions Limited) in Los Angeles in an edition of sixty-five. The copy held by ARTIST ROOMS is edition number 34/65, inscribed at the bottom left corner of the print, and signed and dated by the artist at the bottom right in pencil. It forms a pair with Night Sky 2 Reversed 2002 (Tate AR00475), of which the copy held by ARTIST ROOMS has a matching edition number, 34/65.
