This Woman’s sash was made with fibre by an anonymous artist and lives at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The material is a rusty orange, with delicate darker lines woven horizontally across. I can only imagine how the maker created the sash, and how long it took. What was their life like? I wonder, what was this sash for? Was it for everyday wear? Or something special for ceremony? When I look at the sash, I think of the quiet patience of weaving, which is such a simple technology but also so time-consuming. How many hours did it take to wind and braid the tassels at the end? I think about all the different colors of dye that would have been available and the choice to go for this subdued but rich orange. Each of us as artists are in an ongoing conversation, with one another, across time. We absorb ideas and processes, and each new artist leaves their own mark. I hope this sash has inspired a few artists over the years. I know it has inspired me.
