Simon Fokke made this etching, "Minerva en Telemachus voor een tempel", in the 18th century. It depicts Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, guiding Telemachus, son of Odysseus. During the 1700s, there was a renewed interest in classical antiquity, and the stories and characters it inspired were frequently used to convey moral and ethical lessons. Minerva embodies patriarchal values, here acting as a protector and mentor to Telemachus, guiding him on his journey to manhood. Fokke uses the visual language of the time to reinforce gendered roles and expectations. Note how the goddess literally holds Telemachus close to her body, while pointing to his path. He seems to be in a state of emotional turmoil. The etching invites us to consider the power dynamics inherent in mentorship and guidance. It also encourages us to explore the narratives we inherit and the roles we are expected to play.
