Dimensions Diam. 7.3 cm (2 7/8 in.)

This paperweight was produced by the Baccarat Glassworks, likely sometime in the 19th or early 20th century. It’s made of clear glass, with a delicate floral design encased within. The making of such an object involved considerable skill. The colored glass would have been heated to a molten state, then carefully shaped and arranged to create the flower and leaves. This was then encased in clear glass, creating a lens effect that magnifies the intricate design. Consider the labour involved in producing something like this. Glassmaking has always been a collaborative process, relying on the division of labour and the expertise of many hands. And think too about its original function. A paperweight is a humble object, designed to hold down loose papers. Yet, it is also a beautiful thing, intended to be admired and enjoyed. This tension between utility and beauty is central to understanding the paperweight, and indeed all decorative arts. It reminds us that even the most functional objects can be imbued with artistry and meaning.
