Dimensions Diam. 7.9 cm (3 1/8 in.)
This paperweight was made by Baccarat Glassworks, and while we can’t pinpoint the date, it is a superb example of glassmaking. The glass, while appearing simple, would have demanded considerable skill to produce. Molten glass is a very challenging material. Its viscosity changes rapidly with temperature, so the team of glassworkers would have to work quickly and collaboratively. The clear glass dome would have been made first, likely using a mold. Then, the colored glass elements - the flower, leaves and stem - would have been carefully arranged on the base. Finally, the whole assembly would have been heated and fused together. What might seem like a modest object actually involves considerable expertise. The history of glassmaking is one of constant innovation, as techniques developed to make production more efficient. Though small and meant for the desk, this paperweight is a testament to the possibilities of human craftsmanship. The skill and teamwork involved, challenge any easy distinction between art and craft.
