Curatorial notes

This is Edouard Renoz's portrait of an unknown woman, a photographic print measuring 106 by 62 mm. It was made during a time when photography was still a relatively new medium, largely used by the upper and middle classes. The woman is posed with a stolidity that reflects the expectations placed on women of her era: constrained by both dress and social role. Her clothes denote a certain level of economic status; her gaze, however, suggests a depth and complexity that resist such simple classification. Despite the formality of the photograph, we are left wondering about her life, her thoughts, and her experiences beyond what is shown. While the image aligns with the tradition of portraiture intended to memorialize and present a specific social identity, it also hints at untold stories. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the silent histories of countless women whose experiences remain largely undocumented.
