Domenico Beccafumi made this chiaroscuro woodcut, Heilige Filippus, sometime in the 16th century. Beccafumi lived and worked in Siena during a period of intense religious and political upheaval. Here, the apostle Phillip is represented in tones of brown, holding a book in his left hand and a cross in his right. The print is an intimate portrayal, the apostle’s direct gaze confronts the viewer. Beccafumi’s choice to depict Phillip with such immediacy diverges from more traditional, idealized representations of religious figures. By grounding the apostle in a more human form, Beccafumi blurs the lines between the divine and the everyday. During the Reformation, there was a growing emphasis on individual faith and personal relationships with religious texts. This print reflects this shift, inviting viewers to engage with faith on a more intimate level. Beccafumi masterfully captures a sense of introspection and devotion, reflecting the complex spiritual landscape of his time.
