This vase was produced between 1872 and 1889 by the Chelsea Keramic Art Works. During the late 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement gained momentum as a reaction to industrialization. It saw a resurgence of handmade objects. Within this context, women found opportunities to engage in artistic production. This vase, with its fluid lines and organic form, speaks to the movement's emphasis on nature and craftsmanship. Though it is an unsigned piece we can consider the women artisans who were central to the company's production. They challenged traditional gender roles, finding expression and economic independence through their craft. The vase's surface is covered in a shimmering glaze which evokes a sense of natural beauty. As you look at this vase, consider the hands that shaped it and the social currents that allowed it to exist. It's a reminder of the complex interplay between art, identity, and history.
