Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this drawing with lines and planes, now held at the Rijksmuseum. The composition, a constellation of lines, calls forth a dialogue between chaos and order. Notice how the planes intersect, creating geometric forms reminiscent of early architectural sketches. Throughout art history, we see geometric forms used as symbols of stability and structure. Think of the pyramids of Egypt, each plane and line carefully considered. Here, however, the lines are dynamic, creating a sense of tension. The image evokes a feeling of being in flux, a psychological state where everything is in motion.
