Wols made *Oui, oui, oui* using paint or ink or both and maybe even scratching into the surface, who knows. The title is a huge clue, though, because it signals some kind of affirmation, a saying-yes-to-everything kind of move. The marks feel nervous and urgent, but in a way that also feels really open and searching. I love the drippy redness creeping in from the edges, like blood. You can see that Wols starts with a black ground, and then, zooms in and focuses. There’s a real sense of him trying to get something down, something he can almost see but can’t quite grasp. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, and how he could make marks that were both totally abstract and also totally full of feeling. Both artists show us that art is an ongoing conversation, an exchange of ideas across time that embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
