Curatorial notes

George Hendrik Breitner captured this view of the Amsterdam fish market and St. Anthony’s Weigh House from the Geldersekade, using photography. The photograph's composition leads the eye from the foreground's solid bridge across the shimmering canal waters, towards the buildings. The hazy, almost monochromatic palette, creates a sense of distance, heightening the atmospheric perspective. The structural elements of the buildings are sharply delineated, but their reflections in the water introduce a play of light and shadow that softens the overall effect. Breitner uses the rigid verticals and horizontals of the architecture to create a gridded structure which interacts with the fluid, reflective qualities of the water. He seems to challenge the fixity of urban space, dissolving its solidity through the semiotic interplay of reflection and reality. Notice how the photograph’s formal qualities reflect not just the appearance of Amsterdam, but also the changing perceptions of urban space. The use of photography is an attempt to capture and understand the city’s evolving identity.
