Samuel Bourne produced this albumen print of the Ruins of the British Residency in Lucknow, India. The image shows a ruined building, partially covered with foliage, with a group of Indian workers in the foreground. The Residency was the site of a prolonged siege during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a watershed moment in the history of British colonialism. Bourne’s photograph was created in the wake of these events. As such, it acts as a potent symbol of the rebellion's impact on British power, as well as the colonial project in general. It visually encodes a set of cultural references and historical associations. The choice of subject matter, the ruined Residency, speaks to the rebellion's challenge to the British Empire. The presence of the Indian workers is an interesting detail, pointing perhaps to the complex relationship between colonizer and colonized. To better understand this image, we might research the history of British colonialism in India, the events of the 1857 rebellion, and the role of photography in shaping perceptions of these events.
