This print of the Virgin and Child was produced by Coenraet Waumans in the 17th century, a period defined by religious and political upheaval. Waumans renders the Virgin as both regal and accessible. She exudes serenity, yet there’s also an intimacy in the way she gazes at Christ, poised to nurse. This depiction challenges the traditional Madonna image, which often idealized motherhood to the point of unreachability. Waumans grounds her in a tender, human moment. Simultaneously, the haloed Christ Child is a beacon of divinity, reinforcing the sacred nature of their bond. The Latin inscription, ‘DILECTUS MEVS MIHI, ET EGO ILLI,’ suggests the deep bond that can exist between two beings. It evokes the emotional and spiritual ties that bind mother and child, challenging viewers to consider the many layers of connection that define our shared humanity.
