Cornelis Bloemaert created this engraving, "Seated Madonna," sometime in the 17th century. The image presents the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, both figures adorned with halos, symbols of divine status. The halo, a circle of light, is not unique to Christian art. We find similar symbols in ancient Greek and Roman art, where gods and emperors were depicted with radiant crowns, signaling their power and semi-divine status. This motif made its way into early Christian art, where it was used to identify holy figures. The gesture of the Christ Child, his fingers lightly touching his mouth, echoes across centuries and cultures, appearing in classical sculptures and Renaissance paintings, each time carrying a slightly altered yet still recognizable sense of innocence. This image resonates deeply, tapping into our collective memory and stirring feelings of reverence.
