This page from *Les Secondes Oeuvres, et Subtiles Inventions De Lingerie du Seigneur Federic de Vinciolo Venitien* is a printed design for needlepoint. It is a black and white illustration of six squares containing different stitch patterns which are described as *Carrez de at maille*. The book, published in 1603, is considered one of the earliest examples of needlepoint design in Europe. The designs show a combination of geometric and floral patterns in squares framed by rows of black dots which provide a stark contrast against the white background. Federico de Vinciolo, an Italian artist, produced this book and others like it, all of which have become highly sought-after works of art. The work has survived for centuries and is now part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, demonstrating its lasting influence on the art of needlepoint.
