Julie C. Brush made this portrait of a dress, we don't know when, with a light touch, in watercolor. The dress is a silvery gray, with these little bursts of blue embroidery at the cuffs and collar – almost like tiny fireworks. I can feel the silkiness of the fabric, the way it would rustle and flow. You can see the attention to detail in the folds of the skirt, how each one catches the light. It makes me think about what it must have been like for Brush, carefully rendering each button and pleat, trying to capture the essence of this garment. And what was the occasion for this dress, and what happened while it was being worn? It’s also a window into a different time, when clothes were made with such care and attention. So, who wore this dress, and did Julie herself make it?
