This is Marc Chagall's etching titled "The Sick Stag". Chagall, as a Jewish artist in a world that was becoming increasingly hostile towards Jewish people, often explored themes of displacement and vulnerability. His personal experiences are deeply embedded in his art. The forest scene and the fallen stag, juxtaposed with other stags grazing peacefully, evoke feelings of isolation and mortality. The stag on its back could be a reflection of the trauma and uncertainty experienced by many during the early to mid 20th century. The imagery can be quite visceral; we are drawn into the emotionality of the scene and the stag’s physical distress. Through his unique visual language, Chagall invites us to consider the broader implications of suffering and resilience in the face of adversity.
