Deckenentwurf (Allegorische Darstellung) 

Johann Andreas Wolff created this ceiling design, or 'Deckenentwurf', using pen and brown ink on paper. The thinness of the ink and the delicacy of the lines allow us to see the underdrawing, which gives us insight into Wolff's design process. The material's influence on the drawing is clear. Paper, being relatively inexpensive, invites experimentation and iteration. The use of pen and ink also allows for detail, precision, and a degree of control. Brown ink, derived from natural sources, imparts a warmth that contributes to the drawing's inviting quality. Sketches such as this were crucial in the design process of large-scale decorative schemes, allowing artists to explore complex allegorical compositions before committing to the time and expense of executing them on a grand scale. Appreciating the material and process allows us to look beyond the traditional hierarchy of fine art versus craft, recognizing the skill and labour involved in all forms of artistic production.
