This textile work, Coverlet, was made by Miriam Y. Solomon. Looking at this work, I can’t help but think about the artist in her studio, or maybe not even a studio, but hunched over a table, carefully choosing threads and knotting them together. What thoughts were running through her mind as she repeated those actions? Did she see these repeated shapes in her dreams? It’s like she was setting up a conversation between different densities and textures. It’s not just about seeing the finished thing but imagining the whole process of building it. The dark blue really vibrates against the white. See how the geometric forms emerge? I can feel the artist's concentration as she painstakingly worked this through. You can feel it in the rhythm of the design. It’s a bit like Agnes Martin’s grids—but cozier. It reminds us that we are always in conversation with the past. Artists borrow, steal, and transform. We don't invent in isolation, but find ourselves in a sea of gestures across time. Isn't it amazing how a simple pattern can hold so much history and feeling?
