This black and white photograph of Zuiderzeewerken: Haven Oude Zeug was shot on May 4th, 1928 by Fototechnische Dienst K.L.M. Looking at this harbor scene from above, I think about the work involved in making a place for boats. I wonder about the photographer floating high above, recording this busy scene with its boats, buildings and breakwaters. The image is quite tonal, almost a study in the different textures of water, land, and the things people make. I imagine the photographer arranging their equipment, focusing the lens, and capturing this image in a split second. The light would be different now, the boats and buildings would have changed. But the photograph holds that one moment for us, so that we can see this particular harbour, and think about all the people who made it possible.
