Editor: This is "The Seamstresses" by Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet. It's quite a large engraving at the Harvard Art Museums. I’m immediately struck by the somber mood. All these women look so serious. How do you interpret this work? Curator: It's fascinating, isn’t it? To me, it evokes a sense of quiet dedication. The women are absorbed in their work, heads bent in concentration. It almost feels like a sacred ritual, wouldn't you agree? Editor: I guess so. I was focusing on the lack of joy! Curator: Perhaps Beauvarlet is hinting at the virtue found in labor itself. What do you think he is saying about women's roles? Editor: That's something I hadn't fully considered. Thanks!
