Willem Linnig the Second created this landscape with etching in 1862. Linnig situates us in a rural setting, right outside a farmhouse with four figures in front. Linnig lived during a time of significant social change, particularly regarding class structures and rural life. As industrialization progressed, the traditional agrarian lifestyle was increasingly idealized by artists, writers and city dwellers alike. The four figures outside of the farmhouse become a focal point. They appear to be engaged in a casual gathering which suggests themes of community and interpersonal relationships, while raising questions about the role of rural communities in shaping social identity. Linnig avoids idealizing the rural environment or the laboring class. He presents a straightforward view of country life that acknowledges their presence without romanticizing their condition. This image offers a moment to reflect on our connections to the land and each other.
