Vilhelm Lundstrom made this landscape with agave using pencil on paper. You know, looking at it, I can imagine Lundstrom outside, squinting in the sun, trying to capture the light as it bounces off the rooftops and the spiky leaves of those agaves. There's a sense of immediacy here, like he's wrestling with the scene, trying to pin down the essence of the place. It feels raw and unfiltered, a direct transmission of his experience. The pencil lines are so alive, they almost vibrate on the page. The marks feel kind of anxious and the composition is so energetic, it reminds me of the Fauves who went before him, and also prefigures so many artists who would come after. We are all constantly in dialogue, across time, inspiring each other. And in this conversation, it is the humble pencil that can carry so much feeling.
