Jasper Johns created "The Seasons (Summer)" as a partial print with chalk additions. In this piece, Johns explores the fluidity of identity through the cyclical nature of time. The ghostly silhouette that dominates the composition invites reflection on the transient human experience. Johns has said of his work that he is interested in "things which suggest the world rather than an illustration of the world." The work prompts us to consider the intersectional layers of identity – how our bodies inhabit the world, marked by time, memory, and cultural context. Note the fragmented and layered elements within the silhouette. These represent the complexities inherent in any representation. Johns challenges traditional notions of representation by blurring the lines between the personal and the universal, the past and the present. It encourages us to contemplate how societal norms shape our understanding of self, and how we can find liberation in embracing the multifaceted nature of identity.
