"As we stopped for lyk" is a 1914 work by Kazimir Malevich, a prominent figure in the Russian avant-garde. The image features a simplified, almost cartoon-like depiction of a Cossack on horseback, holding a spear, and figures in the background appear to be on horseback as well. This work, with its bold black outlines, flat planes of color, and simplified figures, embodies Malevich's Suprematist style, which sought to express pure geometric forms and abstract concepts. The work reflects the social and political upheavals of pre-revolutionary Russia and its imagery is often interpreted as an allegory for the Cossacks' role in Russian history.
