Gilbert Schoute created these figure compositions with illustrations using engraving techniques. Schoute's work invites us to reflect on the historical and social contexts that shape our understanding of gender and power. These prints, reminiscent of classical scenes, provoke questions about the portrayal of women. The women are depicted in various states of repose and activity, set against architectural backdrops that suggest both domesticity and public life. The power dynamics in the image can be interpreted through a feminist lens. Who is looking? Who is being looked at? How do the figures negotiate the space they occupy? This artwork opens a space to question the narratives that define us, and it offers a glimpse into alternative stories yet to be told. The illustrations serve as a reminder of the importance of challenging established norms.
