Editor: We’re looking at Bryan Wynter’s “Saja,” a large-scale painting in the Tate collection. It feels almost like a landscape, but abstracted. What’s your take on this piece? Curator: Consider the physical process. The layering of paint, the controlled yet organic lines – it speaks to a deliberate construction. How does the artist's hand, the labor involved, shape our understanding of this landscape, questioning traditional notions of artistic skill versus craft? Editor: So you're seeing the process of creation as important as the image itself? I never thought about it like that. Curator: Precisely! The materiality challenges us to examine the social and economic context of art production itself, shifting our focus from aesthetics alone to the very means of its making. What have you learned from this? Editor: I'll pay more attention to the materials that the artist use and the processes of making in the future.
