Editor: So, this hanging scroll is "Towering Mountains and Fantastic Waterfalls," created around 1600 by Zhang Chenglong. It's rendered in ink, giving it a very monochromatic feel, but I can't help but feel the texture—I'm struck by the misty, almost ethereal quality of it. How do you interpret this work? Curator: From a formal perspective, observe how the artist uses varied ink washes to establish depth and atmosphere. Note how the composition avoids strict linear perspective. Instead, Chenglong uses layering to create a sense of vastness. Consider the texture – it's crucial to the reading. The brushstrokes, varied in their application, build up form and shadow simultaneously, aren't they? Editor: Yes, that’s immediately visible to the eye, it gives the waterfall and the mountains more definition. What's interesting is how the mountains seem to float amidst the clouds because the brushstrokes for mountains and water blur into each other. Do you see any deliberate strategy at play here? Curator: Precisely. That ambiguity of form contributes to a feeling of transcendence. Think about the formal relationship between the solid masses of the mountains and the ethereal treatment of the mist and water. They are linked by technique. The artist compels a unity by blurring distinctions between what's "there" and what's "not." Does this inform your perspective? Editor: It does, yes. I was so caught up in the atmosphere, but you've revealed how that effect is entirely by how the artist has played with form and texture. Curator: Indeed. It is rewarding when attention to brushwork and form reveals intentional structure. Editor: This was very enlightening; thank you.

This large painting displays a range of fantastic mountains towering above a group of scholar-recluses gathered together on a pavilion to survey the dense bamboo forest and extraordinarily complex array of waterfalls. Beyond these unlikely watercourses loom magnificently dark and imposing peaks. Zhang Chenglong shows the viewer a duality: the distant mountains are seen as greatly distorted fantastic forms, while those elements in close relationship to the everyday world in the foreground, including human figures, architecture, and bamboos, are all rendered in extreme detail that maintains a great truthfulness to reality. The mountain imagery is thus uniquely different from other worldly phenomena, signifying the notion of mountains as a sacred realm where humans can communicate with transcendental beings or seek refuge.
