This poster, of a sculpture by Bill Mayer, created by Lanny Sommese, probably dates from 1983 or 84. I'm imagining Sommese, in his studio, carefully blocking out the solid zones of colour. The deep, almost black, green, the cadmium yellow, and the bright orange all create a playful graphic tension. It's a study in structure, the sculpture reduced to its bare geometric bones. I feel a sense of architectural calm. I love the way he reduces the sculpture to graphic components, all straight lines and flat planes. There's an odd tension at play between the sculpture's mass and the graphic lightness of the poster, which reminds me of the constructivist posters of Rodchenko. There's an ongoing dialogue between artists, across time. Mayer and Sommese have created a beautiful, optimistic piece that seems to sing with possibility. It is a conversation made visual.
