Jeremiah Gurney captured this view in the Main Hall, with photography, a medium that seeks to freeze time. Here, the most arresting symbol is the palm tree, centrally placed, its fronds reaching towards the elaborate garlands. The palm, in antiquity, signified victory and eternal life. One can find it depicted in ancient Roman triumphs, a symbol of conquest and renewal. Yet, consider its presence here, not in a scene of military triumph, but amidst commercial display. This symbol, once representing power and eternity, has evolved, adapted, and been transposed into a space of trade and spectacle. It now perhaps suggests the exotic, the desirable, the promise of a different life attainable through purchase. The collective memory, imprinted with images of power and paradise, subtly influences the desires of the visitors. The viewer is subconsciously drawn to this symbol. Thus, the palm, travels through time, its meaning shifting, yet its emotional pull remains, a testament to the enduring power of symbols to engage our subconscious.
