Curatorial notes

This photograph, titled "Tentoonstelling van het Surinaamsche Steuncomite 20/22 Mei 1915," was taken by Augusta Curiel. It is an image of a room, a space designed with intention. What strikes me about this image is its material presence, the tonal range of the image, and the contrast between the light and shadow that suggests a unique perspective. The eye is immediately drawn to the arrangement of the scene, a display of support. Look at the banner at the back of the room, the order of the chairs and tables. It feels like it's about organizing something, perhaps even organizing our support. It reminds me of the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, who photographed industrial structures with such rigor and care. Like them, Curiel seems interested in capturing the essence of a particular type of space. What I love about art is this ongoing conversation, how artists build upon each other's ideas, creating a beautiful, messy dialogue across time.
