This little drawing, Untitled by Alevtyna Kakhidze, uses graphite and colored pencil on paper. Just looking at it, you can see artmaking as a way of thinking, a process. I love the ladder casually propped against the tree, it implies an action, a story even. The ladder is rendered with such simplicity, and the pond with just a few blue marks. The texture is immediate; you can almost feel the tooth of the paper. And it feels like a thought, jotted down quickly. The drawing is minimal, in line, in color, in tone, and also somehow emotionally resonant. That ladder, though, is so funny to me. The idea of a ladder just leaning on a tree. It reminds me a little of Maira Kalman's work. This piece embraces ambiguity, allowing us to bring our own interpretations.
