Alfred Freddy Krupa made this ink drawing, titled "Below the bridge," presumably on paper with brushes and pens, maybe even sticks. I love the confidence of the line. It has that quality where you feel like the artist wasn't thinking too much, but just letting the hand do its thing. You know? Like when you're on the phone, just doodling away. I wonder if Krupa was down by a real bridge when he made this? It is interesting how the artist defines space by what isn’t there, the negative areas, they give as much information as the marks themselves. It makes me think about those old Chinese landscape paintings. The artist has created a feeling and a mood. He shows how a place is in constant flux. The bridge is fixed, and yet everything around it seems to shimmer and reflect. I feel like this artist is in conversation with painters throughout time and across cultures. It’s all one big conversation, isn’t it?
