Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made ‘archer’ with watercolor, and you can just imagine him outdoors, trying to capture the scene, trying to capture the feeling, of figures, of movement, of a target in sight. The way the colors bleed and flow into each other suggests a kind of immediacy. It's like he's trying to catch a fleeting moment, before it vanishes. I bet he worked really quickly! I can see him outside, maybe a bit cold, trying to put down his first impression of the colors and shapes. The gestural lines and bold color choices remind me of other expressionist painters, who weren’t just depicting reality, but expressing an emotional state. The brushwork feels intuitive, almost impulsive. I wonder what Kirchner might think of my paintings? I like to think we're all in conversation, riffing off each other, across time, through our art.
