Cornelis Galle I created this engraving, Christus en Serafijnen, sometime between 1600 and 1650. Christ sits enthroned, flanked by seraphim, divine winged guardians, symbols of purity and divine love. The seraphim, with their multiple wings, link to ancient Mesopotamian depictions of protective spirits, their gaze both reverent and watchful. Christ's gesture of blessing, reminiscent of the Roman orator's pose, is a powerful symbol of authority and grace, echoing in countless religious artworks across time. This gesture, though Christianized, carries the weight of classical rhetoric and power. Like the ancient gods, Christ is surrounded by light. This motif reappears across cultures, symbolizing enlightenment, divinity, and the triumph of good over evil. The emotional depth of this piece lies in its ability to evoke a sense of awe and reverence. Symbols create a cyclical progression, as the seraphim, Christ, and the light resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings in different historical contexts.
