Curator: I'm instantly transported by this pencil drawing, there is something idyllic about it. It feels calm, even pastoral, yet with an undertone of simple, everyday life. Editor: Allow me to formally introduce it. This is “Boer en twee koeien in weiland,” or “Farmer and two cows in meadow,” a pencil drawing dating back to 1826 by Leendert de Koningh, currently residing here at the Rijksmuseum. It has elements of both Realism and Neoclassicism in style. Curator: Yes, absolutely. Those cows just lazing about! The farmer is obviously hard at work. Do you think they know they are part of the painting? Honestly, if I was a cow, that is where I'd want to be. Editor: Notice the emphasis on line work, delineating form and creating depth. Observe how the foreground, populated by the farmer and cows, contrasts with the subdued atmospheric perspective in the background. The composition uses balance to guide our eye through the scene, starting with the farmer pouring milk and ending up with the far horizon line, thus demonstrating an adept manipulation of pictorial space. Curator: True, that background just fades away. Speaking of the farmer pouring milk… It strikes me how self-contained this scene is. Everything needed for daily sustenance is present. The human figure, animal, land: all working in harmony... even if the cows are just supervising! Editor: Precisely! There’s a subtle interplay here. We could look at this drawing in terms of subject and space, positive and negative form, seeing it through its structure... Curator: And maybe think about the artist’s mindset as he carefully captured this particular moment of life. What do you reckon De Koningh was thinking? Editor: He was demonstrating a controlled understanding of tonal variations and line work, to portray something timeless. Curator: Timeless indeed! It’s amazing how much narrative a simple pencil sketch can carry across time and space. So glad we get to look at it today. Editor: An artwork like this underscores the potent ability of the drawn medium and also calls on our viewers to regard simplicity, nature, and a single moment in time.
