Robert Frank shot this piece, Wales 39/Lines of My Hand 41, using photography as a way to see and feel the world. The contact sheet offers a glimpse into Frank's working process, a stream of images, moments captured and arranged. The surface is a map of time, each frame a small world, full of light and shadow, together creating a rhythm. Look at the handwritten numbers scrawled across the frames, a personal annotation that brings us closer to Frank's intuitive decision making. The images themselves, grainy and raw, speak of people, landscapes, and fleeting moments. It reminds me of the work of Cy Twombly, whose mark making on canvas feels similarly immediate. Frank’s pictures, like Twombly’s lines, are about the joy of looking, recording, and responding. Ultimately, art is about this ongoing conversation between artists, a way of seeing and feeling that evolves over time.
