Robert Frank made "Whitney 3" with gelatin silver, capturing a moment, or rather, a series of moments, at the Whitney Museum. It's like a storyboard, raw and unfiltered. What strikes me is the texture of the film itself, the graininess almost becomes a character in the piece. Look how Frank lets the edges of the film strip intrude into the images. There's no attempt to hide the process. It’s honest. It's about seeing what happens when you point a camera at a crowd. One frame catches the eye of a woman in the crowd. The next, an artwork on the wall. The next is blurry. I am reminded of Garry Winogrand, another street photographer, who captured the energy of city life. Like Winogrand, Frank isn't looking for perfection. He's after something more real. It's a reminder that art isn't always about polished surfaces; sometimes, it's about embracing the grit.
