Vasile Dobrian made this oil painting, On Both Sides, Our Worries No Longer Exist!, sometime in the middle of the last century, and it's got such a hopeful vibe, right? The colors are like sunshine filtered through a calming haze. You can tell Dobrian wasn't trying to hide the process; the brushstrokes are visible, and the paint has a smooth texture, almost like fabric. I love how he's built this composition with simple geometric forms, like he's piecing together a puzzle. The yellow rectangle in the center feels like a stage, and those orange lines are like props. They slice through the middle, but are they dividing, or are they connecting? It reminds me a little of Agnes Martin's grids, but with a Romanian twist. Both artists are interested in creating meditative spaces, but Dobrian's got this earthy warmth that's all his own. The painting is more about feeling than thinking, and I'm here for it.
