Editor: Here we have Camilla d'Errico’s "Aries," created in 2019 using acrylic paint. There's a dreamlike quality to it, almost like a childhood fantasy. It makes me wonder, what's your interpretation of all the symbolism in this piece? Curator: Indeed, the layering of symbolism is potent. Consider the ram itself, a traditional symbol of Aries, the zodiac sign, which immediately taps into notions of assertive leadership, initiation, and fiery energy. D'Errico, however, presents a softer interpretation through her color choices and the almost surreal composition. Editor: A softer interpretation? Can you elaborate? Curator: Look at the figure atop the ram. It seems like an androgynous young person cradling a lamb, reinforcing themes of innocence, but also hinting at sacrifice—a lamb to be sacrificed. The eyes of the ram are each a different color; a symbol perhaps of conflicting impulses and an avoidance of fixed perspectives. Do you think there might be cultural references at play? Editor: Possibly, especially given d’Errico’s background. But the overall effect is a little unsettling. The figure and the lambs exude tenderness but there is a barely concealed undercurrent of anxiety. It doesn't sit entirely easy with me. Curator: And I wonder, might not that tension, that uneasy peace, speak to something deeper? The vibrant colours contrasting the subtle symbolism suggests both boldness and vulnerability inherent in Aries – in all of us, perhaps? Editor: That’s interesting. So it is less about the surface-level associations and more about the underlying psychological push and pull? I hadn’t considered that. Curator: Precisely. By using familiar symbols in an unfamiliar way, d’Errico prompts us to re-evaluate what we think we know. Editor: I learned so much from this experience! I now feel more comfortable in seeking multiple layers of interpretation in an artwork. Curator: Excellent! And this painting certainly provides ample layers to consider!
