René Magritte made ‘Architecture au clair de lune’ with oil on canvas, though when is anyone's guess. The color palette is mostly grayscale and blues, very clean and flat, which adds to the sort of dreamlike quality of the piece. The flatness of the paint and the lack of visible brushstrokes gives it an eerie, almost artificial feeling, as if it’s not so much painted as printed. Look at the stairs, how they recede into shadow. It's such a simple move, but it completely transforms the space, turning something ordinary into something uncanny. The painting reminds me of Giorgio de Chirico, who was a big influence on the Surrealists. Both of them were interested in creating these unsettling, enigmatic spaces that invite the viewer to question reality. Ultimately, it’s the painting's ambiguity and openness to interpretation that makes it so compelling.
