This is Hans Holbein the Younger’s drawing of “Portrait of Jakob Meyer zum Hasen,” made with metalpoint and brush on paper. Holbein was a Northern Renaissance artist, famous for his portraits which captured the likeness of his sitters, who were often members of the wealthy merchant class, or religious and political figures. Jakob Meyer zum Hasen was a prominent Basel politician during a time of great social and religious upheaval. As one of the most successful and well-regarded portraitists of his era, Holbein was able to move in powerful circles. He became known for his ability to paint people in a way that was both realistic and flattering. His portraits provide insight into the lives of the people who shaped the course of the Reformation. Notice how Holbein has captured Meyer zum Hasen. The tilt of his head and the set of his jaw suggest a man of power and influence. Holbein uses light and shadow to create a sense of depth and volume. The overall effect is one of dignity and gravitas.
