Robert Motherwell made 'Beside the Sea No. 20' with paint, and I love how he lets the process be so visible. It's like watching him think. The blue is so alive, right? Thin in some spots, pooling in others, with these splatters that give it this sense of spontaneity. And then there's that big, dark stroke at the bottom, almost like a horizon line, grounding the whole thing. The way the colors bleed and interact, especially where the blue meets that dark mass, it's like a little drama playing out on the canvas. I think of Joan Miró, maybe, that same playful approach to form, a similar interest in the subconscious. Ultimately, though, it's all Motherwell. This is a testament to art's power to evoke a feeling, a mood, without spelling everything out for you.
