Editor: We're looking at Keith Milow's 89/10/80/D, housed at the Tate. The materials give it a really interesting layered texture. The verticals interrupt what would otherwise be a neat set of horizontal bands. What strikes you about this work? Curator: Note the calculated tension between the textured surfaces and the imposed geometric forms. The vertical elements, while seemingly simple, create a complex interplay with the horizontal strata. Consider how the artist uses the picture plane—do the shapes recede or advance? Editor: They feel almost architectural, like columns. I see what you mean about the tension. It’s like a ruin, both structured and decayed. Thanks for pointing that out! Curator: Precisely. The materiality and form work together to create a dynamic visual experience. It has been a pleasure to engage with you on this interesting example of abstract art.
