Stefano della Bella created this print, “Two Resting Men in a Landscape,” sometime in the 17th century. During this period, artists were expanding the conventions of genre art, often depicting scenes of everyday life. Della Bella’s print captures a moment of respite in the countryside. The landscape is rendered in delicate lines, and the figures, presumably lower class, are relaxing under a tree. Yet, these images of leisure were often infused with the complex social dynamics of the time. Who are these men and what are their stories? How does their social standing influence our interpretation of their rest? Are they figures of an idealized rural existence or merely pausing from difficult labor? By engaging with the artwork, we are asked to reflect on the societal structures that shape experiences of work, leisure, and identity, then and now. What does it mean to pause, to rest, and who gets to do so?
