Here we have a length of parasol cotton with grey-green stripes on either side, made by Gustav Schnitzler. What I like about this is the gentle colour palette, the way the grey-greens and off-whites interact; it has a calm, soothing presence, like a rainy day. Up close, you can see the slightly irregular texture of the cotton. It’s not perfectly smooth, but has a bit of a weave. If you look closely at the grey-green stripes, you can see a series of tiny perforations, like holes punched by a sewing machine. They add a delicate, almost ghostly quality to the stripes, which creates a gentle rhythm and softens the contrast. I’m reminded of Agnes Martin’s work, particularly her use of grids and subtle color variations to evoke a sense of tranquility.
