Richard Diebenkorn made this drawing, 'Untitled [seated nude pulling back]' with what looks like a graphite stick on paper. The simplicity of line makes it look so easy, like he’s barely trying, but we all know that takes serious skill, right? The lines are delicate, a bit hesitant, especially around her face. It's like he's feeling his way around the form, not quite sure, but definitely curious. I love how he lets the paper breathe, leaving so much space around the figure. He isn't trying to create a likeness, he wants to give you a feeling. Check out the way the shading behind her arm gives the illusion of depth without ever filling in the rest of the picture. Diebenkorn’s line reminds me of Matisse, but with an American twist. You can see him working through an idea. It feels raw and unfinished, but in a good way, you know? It's like you're seeing the artist's thought process right there on the page.
