Gherardo Starnina’s triptych “Salvator Mundi, The Angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin Annunciate”, painted between 1404 and 1407, is a striking example of the early Renaissance style. The central panel depicts Christ as Salvator Mundi, the “Saviour of the World”, seated on a throne and raising his right hand in blessing. To his left, a kneeling angel announces the Virgin Mary’s pregnancy with Christ. The right panel shows Mary, with a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, hovering over her. The triptych’s gilded frames and the realistic depiction of the figures point to Starnina’s mastery of painting during the early Florentine Renaissance. This artwork is currently on display at the Städel Museum.
